The Waymont approach

Waymont Consulting is a technical consultancy based in Guildford and Tewkesbury. We provide novel hardware and software solutions to meet our clients’ most challenging problems.

The company

Engineering-led since 2000

We work across a spectrum of cutting-edge technology, from high-speed signal processing with FPGAs to complex control systems for multiple networked instruments.

Waymont undertakes a comprehensive range of projects, from feasibility studies and technology demonstrators through to fully operational systems. Projects can be built from the ground up, or as improvements to existing applications.

Projects are typically in the areas of signal processing or cyber security, often using hardware designed in-house, followed by bespoke firmware and software algorithms and a GUI front-end.

Programming languages used include VHDL for FPGAs; C, C++, Rust, Python and MATLAB for data processing; and HTML, JavaScript, TypeScript and React for GUI implementation.

Our clients are UK Government and small to large technology companies who seek our wide-ranging expertise and flexible approach to solve their most challenging problems.

The company was originally established by Dave Waymont in 2000 and Phil Morris joined as a Director in 2007.

Guildford

Guildford is a well-developed market town, with a contemporary cathedral, modern university, world-class sports facilities, extensive shopping and commercial developments, as well as a vibrant nightlife.

Our offices are a five-minute drive from the town centre on the Surrey Research Park, widely regarded as one of the best science parks in the UK. It offers a serene location with lakes, benches, table tennis and a choice of cafés. Rail and bus links are within walking distance, providing easy access to London and the local countryside.

Tewkesbury

The historic riverside town of Tewkesbury is one of Gloucestershire’s most popular tourist attractions, with a traditional high street of independent shops full of character and charm.

Our offices are just off the M5 and close to Ashchurch train station. Easy access to the motorway and rail network means Bristol and Birmingham are less than an hour away, providing excellent links to the south-west and the rest of the UK.

Waymont Consulting was established by Dave Waymont.

2007

Phil Morris joined the company as a Director.

2011

James Buchanan joined Waymont Consulting.

Leadership

At the core of Waymont’s success is a leadership team that remains rooted in engineering. Our directors bring decades of multidisciplinary experience to the table, allowing them to move seamlessly between strategic planning and detailed technical execution.

This hands-on approach enables them to provide real-time guidance to our engineering teams during the design phase. It fosters a culture of continuous mentorship and ensures that our clients’ technical hurdles and most challenging problems are resolved swiftly and efficiently.

Phil Morris

Director

Phil shapes the company’s technology strategy and leads innovation in signal processing, RF systems and cross-domain security solutions. He partners with customers to translate complex operational challenges into robust, future-proof technical solutions.

With over 25 years of experience in software, FPGA and systems engineering, Phil has spearheaded the development of advanced RF survey and signal processing capabilities across a range of defence and security environments.

Prior to joining Waymont Consulting in 2007, Phil studied Electrical and Information Sciences at the University of Cambridge, graduating in 1999. During his studies, he was sponsored through the Ministry of Defence DESG Graduate Training Scheme, gaining experience across a diverse range of organisations through industrial placements.

Following university, Phil joined a technical consultancy where he contributed to a variety of specialist engineering projects, including the development of a Very Low Frequency receiver, a high-rate demodulation platform and network traffic monitoring systems. This broad technical background continues to inform his approach to solving challenging engineering and security problems for clients.

James drives the strategic growth and operational evolution of Waymont Consulting, ensuring that the company’s internal capabilities and infrastructure evolve alongside its expansion. He plays a pivotal role in identifying and developing new business opportunities across RF systems, cross-domain, and wider defence and security sectors, aligning the firm’s expertise with the industry’s emerging challenges.

Combining commercial oversight with technical delivery, James manages a diverse portfolio of programmes. With more than two decades of experience in software engineering, he brings a rigorous analytical approach to solving the intricate technical problems faced by the company’s clients.

Before joining Waymont Consulting in 2011, James studied Physics at Durham University, where he completed an experimental PhD investigating applications of X-ray and neutron scattering techniques within nanotechnologies.

After his doctoral studies, James started at a university spin-out, first as a post-doctorate researcher, then progressing to become Head of R&D. In this role, he led a specialist research team in the development of cutting-edge anti-counterfeit and track-and-trace technologies based on material topology and laser optics. This period of high-level research, complemented by a tenure as an independent consultant, provides the foundation for his current work in delivering sophisticated security and engineering solutions.
